In Germany, New Year&#8217;s Eve is called <em>Silvester<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>The Origin of the Word <\/strong><em><strong>Silvester<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The name&nbsp;<em>Silvester<\/em>&nbsp;originates from the Christian feast which takes&nbsp;place on the anniversary of the death of&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pope_Sylvester_I\" target=\"_blank\">Pope Silvester I<\/a>&nbsp;on December 31st. Additionally, fondue or raclette are popular options. Of course, any dinner or party culminates in a midnight toast to ring in the new year. The verb for &#8220;to toast&#8221; in German is <em>ansto\u00dfen<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A major part of New Year celebrations in Germany is shooting off fireworks and firecrackers. Some people go somewhere to see a fireworks display, but many set off their own in their yard or in the streets. <em>Der B\u00f6ller&nbsp;<\/em>is a firecracker, and &#8220;to set off a firecracker&#8221; is the verb&nbsp;<em>b\u00f6llern<\/em>.
