YABLA FAQ

What does "Yabla" mean?

Yabla means faster language acquisition through interaction with authentic television, film, and music. It has the same meaning in any language!

How does Yabla promote acquisition and retention of a foreign language?

First, through the use of interesting and engaging real world videos that hold your attention and bring you back for more. Second, through dynamic interactivity and multi-modal presentation that includes audio, video, and text. Numerous studies have documented the extreme synergistic benefit of combining multiple simultaneous modes of input and interaction.

What about beginners?

Exposure to authentic video is useful to all levels of language enthusiasts. Studies have shown that even rank beginners, given proper support tools such as those made available by The Yabla Player, benefit from exposure to native speakers and genuine culture. We provide a wide range of authentic content ranging from quite simple to rather difficult.

May teachers project Yabla videos to a class or group of students?

Yes, teachers who are subscribers may project Yabla videos to a classroom or assembled group of students.

Can Yabla be used by schools?

Yes, we have special programs for teachers and educators. You will be able to assign videos to your students and have direct access to their game scores for feedback and assessment. We recommend students be assigned a Yabla Video and told that their highest Yabla Game score for the assigned video will be recorded. This will encourage the students to play repeatedly, building their skills with each attempt.

Aren't translation subtitles "cheating"?

As the learner, you have full control. You can turn off (or on) either set of subtitles by clicking the small button to the right of each caption box, depending on your needs at any given time. Full translations give early learners the benefit of exposure to true native content without the accompanying frustration of severe incomprehension. Studies have shown that translation availability enables 2nd language acquisition in beginners.

Is my computer capable of running Yabla?

Try the free demo. If you have no problems, you should have no problems with Yabla service in general. Generally speaking, most modern home computers, PC, Mac or Linux, are capable of running Yabla. All that is required is that a Flash Plug-in, version 8 or higher, be installed. It is downloadable here.

Can I put my own videos into the Yabla format or make use of Yabla technology?

Maybe. Write to us at inquire@yabla.com or call us in the USA at +1 212 625 3226 and we'll be happy to discuss.

I spotted a mistake in the transcription/translation, what should I do?

TROUBLE SHOOTING FAQ:

I can't see anything, what should I do?

Do you have Flash plug-in version 8 or higher installed? It is available here.

Why does the video lag behind the audio?

If you are experiencing this problem, your computer doesn't have enough resources for Yabla. Try closing programs that are not in use. If the problem persists, you will have to use a newer, more powerful, computer. For those of you with computers "on the edge" of compatibility, you may find that our shorter clips play well but longer Yabla clips fall out of synchronicity.

Something is not acting right on your site or in the Yabla Player, what should I do?

Write to us at support@yabla.com. Be sure to tell us what kind of computer you are using, your connection speed, and be explicit about the nature of the problem. If the problem is only with a specific video, be sure to tell us which one.
